Setting Permissions

You can disallow some actions in a PDF document so that users only have specific rights in the PDF. For example, they could have the right to open and read but not to print the document.

Go to the Tools tab and click Password. A new window will open.

Click Browse to select the PDF file that you want to set restrictions on. Select the Disallow these actions in the PDF document check box. Next select what actions are to be disallowed:

  • Printing
  • Modifying document
  • Content copying or extraction
  • Commenting
  • Form field fill-in or signing
  • Document assembly

Next you need to set a password. This password can only be used to change the restrictions of a document in the PDF editing software. This password will not enable users to overcome the restrictions in Adobe Reader.

Click Set Password to apply the restrictions to the selected file.

If you have just edited a PDF, you can apply restrictions as part of the saving process.

To save a PDF file with restricted permissions, click Save PDF in the File group on the Home tab. The Save As window will open. Select a new name for the document. To protect your data against accidental loss, Smart PDF Editor does not allow you to overwrite existing files.

Next, click the Security tab on the right-hand side of the Save As window. Select the Disallow these actions in the PDF document check box. Next select what actions are to be disallowed:
