Integrated Imaging Systems Uses SmartSoft's OCR Technology to Extract Text from Invoices and Consignment Notes

Integrated Imaging Systems is a privately-owned Australian company that specializes in solutions and services for document imaging, data capture, data entry and remote scanning. Based in Campbellfield, Victoria, Australia, the company has provided imaging systems to major institutions across Australia for over 23 years.

Integrated Imaging Systems successfully used SmartSoft’s optical character recognition (OCR) technology to extract text from forms, such as invoices and consignment notes.

Case Problems

The Australian company was looking to integrate accurate OCR technology into two of their products: a logistics application and an accounts payable solution for extracting data from invoices. The images to be processed with OCR were Tiff or single and multipage color and searchable PDF documents.

In both applications, the processed data had to be exported into various formats. Integrated Imaging Systems was also planning to use the technology in future applications.

They had already tested other OCR engines which were not providing sufficient results. The company selected SmartSoft because the Smart OCR SDK delivered the highest accuracy among all tested solutions and it also offered zoning capabilities which the company needed for its products.

Since the data that had to be extracted was located at different positions on the various documents, Integrated Imaging Systems used Smart OCR SDK’s template functionality to automate the locating and recognition of the data. Different templates were created for the various document layouts, with the text regions specified for each template. The software then automatically found the corresponding template for each processed image. In this way, the applications could automatically perform OCR and extract the necessary information accurately, without the need to manually specify the location of the data on the form. The templates provided dynamic location of text regions, so the regions were properly located even if the document was moved, rotated, or zoomed during scanning.

SmartSoft’s and Integrated Imaging Systems’ developers worked collaboratively to achieve the best results and implement the template functionality. IIS managed to achieve its goal – provide its customers with solutions that could automatically extract data from forms. “SmartSoft’s professionals have been quite cooperative and we have done well from them assisting us,” commented Sam Guidice, CEO of Integrated Imaging Systems.
