Old Maple Learning Center Automates Test Scoring with OCR Technology from SmartSoft

Highly-accurate OCR, ICR and scanning technologies were used to automate the process of test grading

SmartSoft, the leading provider of innovative optical character recognition (OCR), document capture and conversion software solutions, has announced that its Smart OCR technology has been selected for the automation of CAT and SAT test scoring. Old Maple Learning Center has successfully used SmartSoft’s optical character recognition technology to capture and extract answers from test sheets.

The learning center aids high schools students in preparing for college admission by offering test CAT and SAT exams. Due to increasing numbers of students, Old Maple was looking for a way to automate the test scoring process. SmartSoft was selected because of their proven expertise in custom OCR solutions.

Automation was achieved through scanning the standard answer grids and sending them directly for processing. SmartSoft’s OCR and intelligent character recognition (ICR) technologies were used to recognize and extract the score sheets data and then transfer it to the learning center’s existing Excel model for scoring.

Old Maple Learning Center now enjoys a fast, accurate and smooth test grading process. They have significantly improved error rates and scoring times. The complete case study can be found here.
